The mission of the University’s Legal Studies Program is to educate students to understand the role and function of law in our society, to understand and apply fundamental principles of law through a hands-on learning approach, and to apply critical thinking, ethical conduct, and respect for others and the rule of law in a global society.

The University’s American Bar Association-approved Paralegal Studies program options also seek to prepare students to become paralegals with the knowledge, values, and skills to perform effectively as professionals working under the supervision of attorneys in various legal environments.

Students understand the structure and functions of the American legal system, including governmental structure, the court system and alternative methods of dispute resolution, and recognize the role of law and democratic principles in our society.

Students can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Students demonstrate analytic and critical thinking, including using legal reasoning in the application of basic legal principles to fact situations and the ability to read cases with understanding and apply case law to legal problems.

Students demonstrate knowledge of basic legal principles and core substantive and procedural laws.

Students can conduct literature-based and legal research using library materials as well as computer assisted research programs to produce reports.

Students understand professional rules of conduct and demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.

Concentration in Dispute Resolution

Students in the dispute resolution concentration will explore alternative methods for resolving disputes traditionally resolved through the civil or criminal legal systems. This concentration provides students with an understanding of conflict management theories and alternative dispute resolution practices, and an introduction to practical skills in negotiation, mediation, and facilitation.

Concentration in Paralegal Studies

This concentration is designed to prepare students for careers as paralegals in private law firms, government agencies, or corporations. A paralegal performs specifically delegated substantive legal work under the supervision of an attorney who is responsible for the paralegal’s work. Paralegals may not provide legal services directly to the public, except as permitted by law. Graduates may also pursue careers in law-related areas of the insurance industry, banking and securities, businesses, non-profit agencies, or in federal, state, or local governments. Concentration electives allow students to focus on areas such as investigations, criminal law, general civil law, or law and financial issues.

Concentration in Public Affairs

The public affairs concentration analyzes the application of law to public policy concerns, while developing critical thinking, legal research, and writing skills. Government regulation, vulnerable populations, and international, multicultural, and emerging issues are emphasized.
