The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University offers a Bachelor of Music Degree leading to teacher certification which you may tailor to suit your talents and professional goals by choosing a concentration in performance, composition or music education through applied studies of your chosen instrument, ensemble performance, music theory, history, literature and current trends.
This degree program is designed to help you become a top notch music educator. Choose from band, choral, or orchestra tracks to specialize your education. You will also take 21 hours of education courses and participate in a student teaching program. After you complete the music and education program requirements, you can pursue teacher certification.

Here, you can sing in a chorus, go to a live performance, compose an original piece, enjoy music of various genres and play your instruments, all while refining your natural gifts and talents. Surrounded by artistic institutions throughout our area, we strongly encourage you to participate in Southeast Texas’ cultural life.
Some of our regional ensembles include the Symphony of Southeast Texas, Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society, Beaumont Community Players, Beaumont Ballet Theatre and the Beaumont Civic Ballet. Other opportunities lie in our rich variety of religious institutions, live music venues and community theatre companies, to name a few, that are always willing to have LU music students as performers - and some of those pay scholarships or stipends. Southeast Texas is an ideal place to study music in all its forms.
Courses You May Take
Music Theory: This course is a practical/theoretical study of tonal music fundamentals, particularly those of common practice.
Music Literature: You'll learn about the important events in music history with emphasis upon those aspects of music associated with style, form and performance.
Music History: This class will cover the literature and advances made in music from its beginnings to today.
Conducting: Basic patterns and rudiments of instrumental conducting and rehearsal techniques.
Orchestration: Techniques of writing and arranging for orchestral instruments in small combinations and for full orchestra.
Marching Methods: Introduction to basic marching band maneuvers and marching band music. Fundamentals in all styles of drill design and charting. Computer assisted charting.
Elementary Music: Advanced study of music activities, materials and techniques for teaching music
Career Paths
As a music education major, you have many options open to you upon graduation, depending on the areas in which you network and perform during your studies. We highly recommend further graduate and even postgraduate study to take you to the heights of your career. Music education majors may be certified as all-level Texas music teachers through our Department of Teacher Education.
