专业概况

在这里学什么？

This major allows students to see the myriad interconnections of politics, culture, and economics, big power structures and everyday interactions, persistent social inequalities, and the practices of intimate life. The greater Los Angeles area provides a natural laboratory for studying such sociological themes as race relations, work and the workplace, the family in a changing society, immigration, civic engagement, and the criminal justice system. Students can base their course of study on two of four theme areas: deviance, social inequality, social organization, or population and family studies. Some of the undergraduate courses involve field research in the urban environment. Courses examine sociology’s historical foundations as well as contemporary theory and research. Professors are actively engaged in timely demographic and policy research.

Ten courses (40units) to include the five core courses of sociology:

SOCI 200 Introductions to Sociology

SOCI 270 Sociological Theories

SOCI 313 Sociological Research Methods

SOCI 314 Analyzing Social Statistics

SOCI 325 Applied Methods (or SSCI 3011: Maps and Special Reasoning)

Five additional courses are required for the major

Students must take all core courses first; SOCI 200 is a prerequisite for all other core courses

Students will take a minimum of 3300-level classes and 2400-level classes

All core courses must be completed before students can take 400-level classes (the core courses are all prerequisites now for 400 levels; some 300 levels have 200 as a prerequisite)

A minimum of a C (2.0) average in the major is required for graduation.
