This specially designed course enables you to make an informed choice about which design subject you wish to study at degree level, giving successful students the opportunity for guaranteed progression onto a named BA programme at Middlesex University.

The Foundation Year in 3D Design is a creative and inspiring multidisciplinary course encouraging students to explore different aspects of design. It builds confidence, helps students identify their strengths and develops skills and techniques. The course offers an experimental diagnostic approach exploring different creative pathways and clarifies industry specialisms to help students choose possible career paths in the creative industries.

Following a multidisciplinary induction, you will explore the core 3D Design subject areas in the first part of the programme, then choose to specialise to work towards your final portfolio of creative work and exhibition. Alongside this you will explore London as a creative centre of visual arts through gallery, studio and event visits, and reflect on your experiences.

A key feature of the 3D Design Foundation Year curriculum is that students benefit from regular formative feedback and assessment. This process is designed to allow you the freedom to experiment, explore and investigate new, different and challenging ways of working.

Overview

Interior design courses are rapidly growing in demand. Interior design is a vital part of our everyday environment, from office lobbies and restaurants to hotels and government buildings. Our course aims to equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you’ll need to start your career in interior design. You’ll learn all about different interior styles, what is meant by ‘placemaking’, challenge your creativity, and explore the diverse interdisciplinary nature of the subject.

In addition to the three-year full-time course, you can also choose a four-year sandwich option. This pathway incorporates a one-year professional placement recognised by a dedicated Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice: Interior Architecture & Design, which you’ll receive at graduation.

You’ll be taught by a team of highly experienced staff, who are academics and industry professionals. They’ll provide you with all the support and guidance you need to succeed in your studies. We’ll provide you with specialist technical and study facilities on campus, which is equipped to a state-of-the-art standard.

Assessment

The course will provide you with opportunities to test your knowledge and understanding informally through ‘formative’ assessment. This will be completed before your formal ‘summative’ assessment which will count towards your final marks. Each module normally contains at least one piece of formative assessment from which you will receive feedback from your tutor. Formative assessments are developmental and any grade you receive from formative assessment does not count towards your final marks.

Careers

Graduates from the BA Interior Design course are equipped to fulfil design roles in interior design practices, specialist studios and consultancies, building and property companies, advisory agencies, and the design departments of public and commercial organisations. The creative industries sector is currently one of the fastest growing employment markets and graduates can take advantage of the many opportunities for design-related roles and activities across the built environment sector, as well as in the education, media, retail and entertainment sectors.
