WHAT CAN I DO WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION?

Whether you are just entering the workforce or looking to take your career to the next step, the MPA will help you advance both personally and professionally. Our program focuses on integrating theory and practice to ensure that students emerge from this program with an education grounded in research and nourished through real-world experience. We prepare students beginning their careers to be competent and effective leaders in public affairs, and mid-career students to enhance their capacities as managers and leaders through the opportunities provided for reflection and integration of new knowledge. The core curriculum provides the skills and knowledge desired by employers today, while our specialization options allow you to hone your abilities in a 15-credit area focus of your choice. Our students engage in community learning experiences throughout their degree. Many courses pair students with public organizations to complete program evaluations, provide technical assistance, and otherwise analyze public administration in action. These students devote significant hours as part of class teams, engage in short-term internships, and/or work in organizations or public agencies through their culminating field-based organizational experience.

Human Resource Management

The federal government employs 2.2. million people; states employ 2.7 million people; and local governments employ 8.1 million people and those employed by the nonprofit sector represent 21.9 million people. Most federal employees work in the Department of Defense followed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. State and local government employees are more likely to engage in occupations in education, healthcare and law enforcement. Further, more than 50 percent, 14 percent and 12 percent of employees in nonprofits, pursue occupations in healthcare, education and social services. These employment trends are accompanied by rapid demographic shifts in the workforce.

To remain on the cutting edge in meeting the needs of this changing environment, it becomes imperative to possess a range of skill sets than ever before. The Human Resource Management specialization is designed to do just that – satisfy this demand for competencies in the public sector.

In response, we carry on the legacy of Senator Hatfield’s principles of public service - a commitment to Oregon and its people and the public service professionals who serve them. Along with specialty courses, we offer one of the strongest sets of skill development courses of any MPA program in the nation.
