专业概况

The BFA in Art and Design Education is a 126-credit program that prepares students for certification to teach art or design education at the Pre-K–12 level, combining rigorous work in art and design education with extensive opportunities for core and elective classes in specific artistic disciplines. Students begin their studies in the foundation year and subsequently continue their core studio classes and their education courses in the department.

Within the BFA in art and design education, students can opt to pursue one of two paths either NY State Certification in Visual Arts, Pre-K-12, or an immersion in community art and design education. Both paths share the same courses with the exception of two student teaching courses and provide the following core experiences:

STUDIO CORE

Students take a sequence of 18 studio credits in a core art or design discipline beginning in their sophomore year. Students choose their core based on their experiences in foundation during their freshman year and their studio interests.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Students pursuing both paths take courses that immerse them in fieldwork and student teaching in K-12 public schools and other settings. For their senior year, students decide which path they want to pursue. Student who choose the certification path fulfill their additional student teaching requirements in the public schools and students in the community art and design education track fulfill their student teaching requirements in community-based settings.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

All students teach in Saturday Art School, a laboratory school for students from Brooklyn’s many neighborhoods. For over a century, Saturday Art School has provided children and adolescents with a quality arts program.

INTEGRATIVE CAPSTONE

Students in both tracks complete a capstone course, Curtain Learning, which helps students integrate theory and practice through reflection and research in the field of art and design education. Students develop their voice as emerging professionals as they synthesize their learning in studio, liberal arts, and teaching.

Mission and Learning Outcomes

The mission of Art and Design Education is the preparation of artists and designers as accomplished educators who can work effectively with pupils in diverse cultural contexts and apply interdisciplinary perspectives in a variety of educational settings, including schools, museums, and community organizations. Students work collaboratively with their peers, community members, and professionals in the field, while they learn to develop lessons and construct environments that promote critical inquiry and creative practice. Through individual and community practices students become engaged artists, educators, and researchers. When students complete their degree program they are:

• Competent and qualified in basic studio skills, specific studio areas, an understanding of past and present art forms, and current methods and materials in all fields and levels of art education.
• Competent and qualified in their pedagogical knowledge and instructional practice.
• Competent and qualified in knowledge of students and their learning as it relates to art education.
• Culturally aware and are effective at supporting appropriate interaction in a variety of cultural, gender, ethnic, linguistic, ability and community contexts.
• Aware of themselves as learners and are able to synthesize and transfer learning to new, complex situations.
• Students value community assets and are able to work with others towards the public good.
